After a tearful goodbye to my husband, I arrived in Chengdu this afternoon, 22.5 hours after my departure. I was met at the airport by Jenny and Mr. Xie, who helped me check in to my hotel. We then met up with Prajna, one of my fellow Yo San grads who is also participating in the externship. Jenny and Mr. Xie took us on a walk to exchange money and show us the hospital where we'll be working. On our walk, the streets were filled with some expected sights (stands of fresh produce, people playing mah jong outside a storefront) and some unexpected ones (a cat on a leash watching the mah jong game).
I get the sense that Chengdu is not really prime a destination for foreign travelers (my first clue may have been when no one in America had ever heard of Chengdu). Prajna, who arrived a day ahead of me, had ordered dinner the night before by drawing a picture of a bowl of noodles. Hmmm, maybe I should have spent more time on the plane studying my Mandarin phrase book and less time watching Will Farrell movies.

And so it begins

Maybe you should have spent more time practicing your drawing!
p.s., we miss you already (and are having much fun rummaging through your desk).
Cat on a leash? It should feel just like home!
So happy you made it safe and sound.
(You should disable the no anonymous comment feature - otherwise everybody who wants to ask you more about say, cats on leashes, will have to get an account with Blogger to do so. But I understand if you want to screen out all the folks with pressing cats on leashes questions.)
Um, yes, I'd like to know more about cats on leashes....and could you bring one of those Chinese cat leashes home for a certain someone. (If you squint your eyes he looks like a giant panda bear). Have fun in China's "party city" and can't wait to read more about your trip!!!
xoxo
Hi Alexa: Candy and I were thinking of you over the weekend and knew you'd left by now. Sounds like you got off to a great start. Especially glad you got there safe and sound. Tell Mike our offer is open. Shoulder is doing great, compliments of our healing angel.
all our love
Candy and Ron
It was so good to hear your voice and know you're safe and sound! I'll try to keep Dad from hogging the web cam. We're looking forward to coming along with you on your blog and seeing pictures. I hope you had a great first day! Love you..........
I am so glad you got there safely!
When your Mandarin and drawing fail you, you can always act like Will Ferrell and see where that gets you.
Missing you. xo
There will probably be more unexpected sights and sounds to come ... fasten your seat belt!
Go, Alexa!! You have a natural talent for learning, so relax on that score, and worry only about the really important things, like keeping Dean Carter from making off with the contents of your desk, and learning how to say, 'thank you, not so many peppers with my dinner, thank you' in Mandarin.
Big hugs,
Laraine
I love knowing that you are there, safe and sound, on the other side of the world. What an adventure!
Maybe the fact that you are not in a tourist center is a good thing. You can notice the "small" things...traditional crafts, birds, what makes people laugh...instead of dashing off to find the equivalents of the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State building.
Looking forward to traveling with you!
Love, Lissa
